What is the big deal about SEO
why do we need it?

SEO or search engine optimization is the art of optimizing your website for search engines. Search engines have programs called spiders, or bots, that crawl your website to index, and (store) your website content for later retrieval. They do this to understand what your page is about.

Search Engine OptimisationIt is important to understand that search engines are the entryway to the World Wide Web, without them, the web would just be a jumble of information. Because search engines index everything on the internet you can think of search engines as giant filing cabinets. Each time you do a search using a search engine they search their databases “filing cabinets” for relevant up-to-date content.  Therefore, as you see, it is in each website owner’s best interest to provide the best most relevant content on his or her services.

As millions of new pages are indexed and catalogued each day, spiders are learning more and more about the relationship and meaning between words. For instance, they know that PPC, Pay Per Click, SEM, Search engine marketing, and AdWords all have do with marketing your website online. So if any of these terms are entered in the search box they know that you want content related to marketing your website. Search engines are spending millions each year to better understand user intent (the reason for searching) so they can serve us content that is more relevant more quickly.

Do you want to appear high up on the search engine ranking?

If you have a website and want to sell online, it is very important for you to have your website indexed or catalogued by search engines. If search engines do not index your website, there is no way for your content to be found by anyone on the web. It is like having a store that’s invisible from the street.

The first step in SEO is having good content; all content on your site has to be relevant to your product or service. Search engines are always looking for new and updated content. Search engines like Google pride themselves on having the most relevant and up to date content on the web.

Website owners like you that think they can fool the search engines by putting up second-rate content must think again. Search engines are like young kids they seek stimulus all the time, if you do not feed them something new and interesting they will just forget about you and move on. In the last 18 months, Google has launched two new web crawlers named “Panda” and “Penguin”. These two crawlers are looking for sites that have duplicate content and are over optimised.  That means if you think you can “borrow” other people’s content and market it as your own by just changing a couple of lines of text, think again. Spiders are looking for new and updated content that will help its users solve a problem. Believe me they know the difference and will “slap” you with a penalty. In addition, if you are a website owner who thinks you can SEO by just repeating the same words ten times on a page think again, you will soon find your website at the “search engine scrap heap”.

Here at HerJoo we follow all the rules and gaudiness set out by the search engines, and make sure that all our content is unique and fresh. Therefore, our sites have optimal chance of ranking highly for the selected search terms. SEO or search engine optimization is a long-term goal, and not a quick fix. It typically takes any ware from 4-6monts sometimes longer to rank for a specified term. In some cases, it could take up to 1 year to rank for a competitive term like “SEO”.

For those of you that would like to fast track your website on search engines, see our ppc services (link to page). Because SEO is so difficult to do there are plenty of “snake salesman” that will tell you all sorts of stories on how they can submit your site on 3000 search engines, and get you ranked on the first page within a month. Who cares about 3000 search engines when Google is the only search engine you need to worry about, if you are lucky enough to rank high on Google for a selected relevant term, chances are that the other big search engines will rank you high as well. Any SEO Practitioner that tells you he got you a first page ranking for your business name is selling you a bill of goods. If you cannot even achieve a high ranking for your domain or business name, you are really in trouble. Some will tell you that they got you a top ranking for the term like “new cars on mars”; if it is not related to your products or services then it’s not helping you in any way.

So why is a high ranking on search engines important?

Having a top ranking on search engines for a selected term is important because it gives you an elevated status so to speak. In addition, it tells people that you have been around a long time and that search engines trust the content on your site. It does not guarantee you more business. Nevertheless, it makes you more authoritative on your service. It is like going to buy a home with a preapproved home loan. Real estate agents will be very keen to show you properties because you have been pre approved.
